Combining the earthiness of folk, the lament of country and the authenticity of stories that you just know are true, The Distant South have been sweating it out in some of Victoria’s best venues over the last 5 years - honing their sound and their songs to the delight of a growing audience.
The Distant South, formed in 2020 by Singer/Songwriter Nick Howells - have been steadily carving out a reputation in the Melbourne Music scene as a dynamic musical outfit offering a unique take on the Alt-Country genre. The song writing is honest, confessional, raw, and instantly relatable. Blending the sounds of Country, Folk, Blues, and Soul, The Distant South channel tales of the human condition into captivating performances that are both melancholic and uplifting. With two EPs and a full-length album already behind them, The Distant South spent 2025 performing, writing and recording.
In 2025, The Distant South recorded their Sophomore Album - which is to be released in August 2026. Recorded at Rolling Stock Recording Rooms by Myles Mumford and mastered by Rick O’Neil - this album includes guest performances from Kylie Auldist, Gretta Ziller, Tim Neal, Ben Franz and Jack Meredith. This new record offers a notable progression in songwriting, style and musical performance, introducing elements of Blues, Soul and Rock - whilst still remaining undeniably Country Music.
